to listen & to learn

I’ve been thinking a lot about intuition lately, as we move through this next chapter of our life as a young family. Before I started teaching children’s yoga, I truly did not understand intuition, or recognize much of its existence in my every day. Yogini published a whole section on what intuition can be, or what it may not be. This opened a new and welcomed door in my life. Setting definitions aside, the best way I can describe intuition, this internal knowingness, is that it is more of a feeling than anything else.

And it’s not as complicated as one might believe it to be. For me, it’s a tiny voice that echoes through the mind at any moment when I’m in the middle of a project or task. Today, the prime example was me seasoning a sheet pan dinner several times too much as the small voice whispered to me that’s too much, it will be too salty, and yet I seasoned the food more. True to form, as I chose to ignore my intuition this time, the dish was much too salty and no one in the house (but my ego) ate the food I so lovingly cooked.

Another recent example was when I received a new phone case in the mail, and it turned out I had ordered the wrong one. It was flimsier than what I expected. I expected the same style as what I had previously been using, therefore trusted it. There was this moment when, as soon as I put the new phone case on my cell, the voice whispered your phone is going to break if you keep that case. Truly, I did not question it. I returned that case within the same afternoon and ordered the correct one. Sometimes, I don’t mess around with intuition.

Most people might think experiencing intuition is a mystical, other-worldly, or ethereal talent. This writing is me spilling the truth that it is not so. I encourage all of my students to sit and meditate for at least seven minutes a day. Seven minutes of peace; seven minutes of stillness; seven minutes of quieting the busy day and to simply rest. Learn to sit with your Self, and it just might become easier to hear that small voice whispering in your own mind. Or much more, to listen.
